BADUNG, Bali – A Singaporean tourist lost a 24-gram gold chain after a motorcycle thief snatched it from his neck while he was riding through Bali’s popular Canggu area late Sunday, police said.
The victim, identified only by the initials CYH, 26, suffered minor injuries after falling from his motorcycle while trying to catch the fleeing suspect.
North Kuta Police chief Comr. I Ketut Sukadana said officers have launched an investigation and are working to identify and arrest the perpetrator.
“We have received the report, and our team is investigating the case,” Sukadana said on Tuesday.
Police said the robbery occurred at around 10:10 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, as CYH was riding alone toward Gang Anggrek in Canggu, Badung Regency.
As he approached a villa, another motorcyclist reportedly sped up from behind, pulled alongside him, grabbed the gold chain from around his neck, and sped away.
“The suspect came from behind at high speed, snatched the necklace, and immediately fled,” Sukadana said. “The victim instinctively gave chase but lost control of his motorcycle and fell.”
CYH suffered abrasions to his hands but did not sustain serious injuries.
Investigators believe the suspect escaped west toward the Canggu Shortcut, a well-known route connecting several parts of the busy tourist area.
Police have questioned witnesses and reviewed nearby CCTV footage, which indicates the theft was carried out by a lone rider wearing all-black clothing and riding an automatic scooter.
“We’re pursuing the suspect and have obtained several leads,” Sukadana said. “The investigation is continuing.”
Police said officers are continuing to track the suspect using witness statements and CCTV footage gathered from the area. No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday.
