BADUNG, BALI – Tourists from Australia and China have been among victims in a series of sexual assault cases reported in Bali in recent days, raising fresh concerns over visitor safety in one of Indonesia’s top tourist destinations.
In one of the latest incidents, a 32-year-old Chinese tourist, identified by her initials QY, narrowly escaped an attempted rape at a hotel in Canggu, North Kuta, early on March 25.
The suspect, a 24-year-old front desk employee identified as KYP, allegedly approached the victim after she sought help to unlock her hotel room. Police said the victim had just returned from a nightlife venue and was unable to access her room.
After several failed attempts to open the door, the suspect persuaded the victim to return to the front desk to retrieve another key. However, while passing a dining area inside the hotel, he allegedly attacked her.
According to police, the suspect restrained the victim from behind, covered her mouth, and sexually assaulted her by groping and attempting to kiss her.
The victim fought back, biting the suspect’s finger and kicking him before fleeing to her room and seeking help. The suspect was later arrested.
In a separate case, a 22-year-old Australian tourist, identified as KNB, was allegedly raped by a security guard at a nightlife venue in Seminyak.
The suspect, identified as ABM, 29, was arrested after the victim reported that the assault occurred inside a women’s restroom at around 4 a.m. local time on March 24. Police said the incident escalated into non-consensual sexual intercourse.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges depending on further evidence.
Another case in Pecatu involved a 22-year-old Chinese tourist, identified as RF, who was raped by a man posing as a motorcycle taxi driver.
The suspect, identified as SAM, 23, was arrested less than 24 hours after the incident. Police said he lured the victim to a secluded area before carrying out the assault and stealing her mobile phone.
Investigators noted that all cases occurred within a short period and involved suspects working in roles that directly interact with tourists.
Bali Police say they have stepped up patrols and are taking firm action to ensure visitor safety.
“We continue to intensify patrols, issue advisories, and enforce the law to ensure Bali remains safe to visit,” said I Gede Adhi Muliawarman, Director of General Criminal Investigation at Bali Police.
Authorities also urged visitors to remain vigilant, particularly during late-night activities.
