Australian Father Suspected of Killing Two Children Before Taking His Own Life in Bali

LEGIAN, Bali — An Australian father is suspected of killing his two young children before taking his own life at a bungalow in Legian, Badung, Bali, on Monday (Sept. 14, 2026).

The man, identified by police by his initials as SDJ, 56, was found dead inside the bungalow along with his two children, a six-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl.

Bali Police spokesperson Kombes Ariasandy said the initial findings from an external examination of the bodies led investigators to suspect that the two children had been killed before their father died by suicide.

“The two children, a boy and a girl, are suspected to have died after being suffocated and strangled, after which their father died by suicide,” Ariasandy said on Monday.

Police have not yet confirmed the exact causes of death, with forensic examinations still under way.

The three bodies were taken to Prof. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Hospital in Denpasar for autopsies. The examinations are expected to establish the causes of death and provide further evidence for the investigation.

Ariasandy said the autopsies were necessary to determine what happened to the three victims.

“Further examination, including forensic examination or autopsy, is required to establish the causes of death,” he said.

The bodies were discovered at a bungalow in Legian where other guests were also staying. Police placed a line around the bungalow where the three bodies were found.

A visit to the scene on Monday afternoon found the bungalow still accessible from the outside, while other units at the property remained occupied. A pair of sandals and cleaning equipment could be seen outside the bungalow where the bodies were discovered.

No police activity was visible at the location by Monday afternoon.

Other guests staying at the bungalow declined to comment to the media about the incident.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and that the results of the forensic examinations will form part of the authorities’ efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
